When we moved to Hungary at the end of November 2024, my children suddenly found themselves in a new world of language. At kindergarten (óvoda), everything happens in Hungarian, which has been wonderful for their understanding but also a big challenge. My son, being older, is curious and brave enough to try speaking, while my daughter shows more resistance—she doesn’t enjoy the idea of learning the language yet. To make the process easier (and hopefully more fun), I decided to bring Hungarian into our home in playful ways. This autumn plan is the first of many themed lessons I want to create for them—so that learning Hungarian feels less like “studying” and more like exploring the seasons together.
🌟 Why Learn with the Seasons?
Children learn best when words are connected to real-life experiences. Autumn is the perfect starting point—it’s full of colors, smells, tastes, and changes in nature. By linking new Hungarian words to leaves, weather, apples, and pumpkins, the vocabulary becomes meaningful and easier to remember.
🍁 Essential Autumn Words in Hungarian
Here are a few simple words to introduce during the season:
- ősz – autumn
- levél – leaf
- sárga levél – yellow leaf
- piros levél – red leaf
- tök – pumpkin
- gesztenye – chestnut
- eső – rain
- hűvös – chilly
Tip: Focus on 5–10 words per week. Repetition through play is more effective than drills.
🎲 Fun Autumn Activities for Kids
🍂 Nature Walk (Őszi séta)
- Collect leaves, chestnuts, and acorns.
- Use Hungarian words while searching: levél, gesztenye, makk.
- Play a game: “Keress egy sárga levelet!” (Find a yellow leaf!)
🎨 Arts & Crafts
- Leaf collage: Glue colorful leaves onto paper and label them (sárga levél, piros levél).
- Pumpkin painting: Decorate a pumpkin and write tök under it.
- Weather chart: Draw sun, clouds, rain, and fog, and ask daily: Milyen az idő? (What’s the weather like?)
🎵 Songs & Rhymes
Music makes words memorable. Try simple Hungarian nursery songs (like Hull a szilva a fáról), or create your own little rhyme with hand gestures:
Hull a levél (wave hands like falling leaves)
Ősszel esik az eső (wiggle fingers like raindrops)
📚 Storytime
If you don’t have Hungarian books yet, use toys to create simple stories, like:
A kis mókus gesztenyét gyűjt ősszel. (The little squirrel collects chestnuts in autumn.)
🍎 Cooking Together
Make something seasonal, like almás pite (apple pie) or sült tök (roasted pumpkin).
Talk while cooking: Ez egy alma. Vágjuk fel! (This is an apple. Let’s cut it up!)
🏡 Simple Games
- Memory game: Match autumn pictures with Hungarian words.
- Simon says (Hungarian edition): Érintsd meg a levelet! (Touch the leaf!)
- Mystery bag: Place autumn items inside, let children feel them, and guess the object in Hungarian.

Teaching kids a new language doesn’t need to feel like a lesson. By weaving Hungarian into everyday play and seasonal traditions, it becomes natural, memorable, and even exciting. Autumn gives us the perfect chance to do this—through leaves, weather, food, and cozy family moments.
This is just the beginning: in the future, I plan to create more themed lessons (winter, spring, daily life, holidays) to support my kids’ Hungarian learning in a joyful way.
